The Volvo Ocean Race is often described as the longest and toughest professional sporting event in the world as well as sailing’s toughest team challenge. The 2017-18 edition will take the teams 45,000 nautical miles around the world, across four oceans, touching six continents and 12 landmark host cities.
As the Official Timekeeper of the Volvo Ocean Race, Omega designed a new timepiece that will be presented to the winning team of this year’s race when it concludes in The Hague in June.
The new Seamaster Planet Ocean Deep Black “Volvo Ocean Race” Limited Edition will be available also to the public, although in a very limited edition. Because the famous sailing event first began in 1973, only 73 versions of this watch have been created.
Driven by the Master Chronometer Calibre 9900, the 45.50 mm timepiece is a divers’ chronograph with a robust case crafted from black ceramic. Red rubber covers the first 15 minutes of the unidirectional bezel while Liquidmetal completes the rest of the diving scale. Red rubber is also used on the pushers, the Omega logo on the crown, and for the “He” symbol on the helium escape valve.
The brushed black ceramic dial includes each Limited Edition number, as well as 18K white gold hour-minute hands and indexes. On the subdial at 3 o’clock, Omega has included a red Volvo Ocean Race ring with coloured hands and number 12.
Another reference to the event can be found on the oriented caseback, where Omega has included the official “Volvo Ocean Race” logo.
Water resistant to 600 metres / 2000 feet, the watch is powered by the Omega Calibre 9900, a self-winding chronograph with column wheel and Co-Axial escapement. It is a Certified Master Chronometer approved by METAS and resistant to magnetic fields reaching 15,000 gauss. Thanks to two barrels mounted in series, it offers 60 hours of power reserve.

Very appealing watch but the price is pretty high IMO.
ReplyDeleteI am afraid you are not considering the exceptional technical features of this watch: ceramic case, ceramic bezel with rubber inserts, METAS certified chronograph movement and entire watch, co-axial escapement, resistant to magnetic fields up to 15,000 gauss, WR to 600 meters. Add that it is a limited edition of just 73 pieces.

ReplyDeleteyup i have tried it on a cuouple of times now.......it is a beautiful watch and the thought of owning something that is limited to just 73 pieces is giving me sleepless nights...hahaha ps am in negotiations for one :-)
