The latest masterpiece from Andreas Strehler confirms the commitment of the Swiss master watchmaker to excellence.
In 2013, he presented the Sauterelle model implementing a new mechanical solution for guaranteeing a constant and linear supply of energy to the balance. Instead of adopting a constant force complication, which is mounted on the escapement wheel, he placed a remontoir d'egalité on the seconds wheel.
In the new model, the remontoir d'égalité accumulates the energy supplied from the twin mainspring barrels through the gear train in a spring, acting on a satellite arm held in position by a star wheel (the satellite).
Every second the star wheel is released and the satellite arm moves ahead so recharging the spring which drives the escapement. This way, the amount of energy transferred to the escapement is always the same or constant. This solution filters factors like fluctuations in the supply of energy, flaws in the gear train, or variations in temperature and viscosity of lubricants which might affect precision.
Now, for his new Trans-axial Remontoir Tourbillon, first showcased at Baselworld 2018 and for sure one of the best novelties of the show, Andreas Strehler has developed a new movement which combines his award-winning remontoir d'égalité with a tourbillon, a special escapement designed to compensate for the effects of gravity.
In a tourbillon, the whole escapement including the balance rotates. This mechanical feat was invented by Abraham-Louis Breguet in 1801. The great watchmaker realised that the way a watch run was affected by changes in its position. Changes were particularly evident when timepieces were kept in vertical position, which happened often considering that, at the time, timepieces were kept in the waistcoat pocket. He understood that the main cause of this behaviour was gravity. While it was not possible to eliminate the gravitational forces, Breguet thought that it was possible to compensate them by installing the regulating organ (the sprung balance) and the escapement inside a mobile carriage performing a complete rotation about its own axis once per minute.
With the Trans-axial Remontoir Tourbillon, Andreas Strehler designed and produced a movement where internal influences on the already pretty linear power supply from the epicyclically limited twin mainspring barrels is filtered through a Remontoir d'égalité and transferred to a Tourbillon escapement mounted on the same axis to eliminate the influence of gravity on the escapement.
Mounted on three roller bearings, the Remontoir d'égalité powers a separate jumping seconds indication which seems to float at 6 o'clock without apparent connection to the train. This is then revealed when you turn the wack and look at the back side.
To show the power left in the two mainspring barrels, the movement also features a power reserve indication using an extremely small differential gear, a speciality of Andreas Strehler. Beating at a frequency of 3 Hz (21,600 vph) with a power reserve of 78 hours, the 250-part hand-wound movement is decorated to the highest standards with edges bevelled and polished by hand.
The typical case has a size of 41.00 mm x 37.30 mm and is available in red gold or in platinum.
The "1/MMZVIII" inscription below the Andreas Strehler name is here explained: “1” refers to the fact that this is the first watch created by the brand in 2018 while “MMZVIII” is Andreas' way to write the year in Roman numerals instead of “MMXVIII”. The Z stands for the German word "zehn" which means "ten".
