Named after the year in which the first Tudor divers’ watch - the reference 7924 dubbed the “Big Crown” - was introduced, the new Black Bay Fifty-Eight maintains the same proportions and 39 mm diameter case of that 1950s model making it an appealing choice for people who like more compact watches and lovers of vintage look.
Finishing touches in gold have been applied to the hour markers, hands and minute track of the black and steel bezel.
The winding crown tube is in satin-brushed steel - a new feature in the Black Bay line - in keeping with the style of the case and winding crown, which bears the Tudor rose logo in relief.
The black dial features the characteristic angular hands known to collectors as snowflake that appeared in the brand’s 1969 catalogue.
The red triangle of its rotatable bezel is a nod to the first generation of Tudor divers’ watches that were, like this new model, waterproof to 200 metres / 660 feet.
Three years after the introduction of its first Manufacture Calibre (we wrote about it here), Tudor launches a second family of movements. With the appearance and finish typical of Tudor movements, the Calibre MT5402 displays hour, minute and second functions and has been specifically designed to power medium-sized timepieces.
The variable inertia balance is maintained by a sturdy traversing bridge with a two-point fixation to ensure robustness and reliability. Thanks to these qualities, together with its non-magnetic silicon balance spring, it is certified as a chronometer the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC).
Beating at 4 Hz (28,800 vph), it guarantees an ideal power reserve of 70 hours, making it possible for the wearer to take the watch off on a Friday evening and put it back on again on Monday morning without having to adjust the time and wind it.
The Black Bay Fifty-Eight can be matched to a riveted steel bracelet inspired to the bracelets of 1950s and 1960s Tudor watches, to a brown leather strap with a folding clasp or to a black Jacquard fabric strap with a gold-coloured band.
