Omega has just unveiled a new Speedmaster CK 2998 Limited Edition.
With its Alpha hands, symmetrical case and dark bezel, the original Omega CK 2998 released in 1959 is still today one of the most appreciated and sought-after vintage Speedmasters.
In 1962, the Speedmaster CK 2998 also became the “first Omega in space” on the wrist of astronaut Walter "Wally" Schirra during the “Sigma 7” mission of the Mercury program.
Like the model presented at Baselworld 2016 (we wrote about it here), this new Limited Edition remains in-line with that design heritage retaining some of the original features but, at the same time, it also displays its own character and introduces several updates.
The polished and brushed stainless steel case has a diameter of 39.70 mm and a total thickness of 14.37 mm. Water resistance is 50 metres / 167 feet.
It frames a lightly sand-blasted silvery dial where blackened “Alpha” hands are used for the hours and minutes, while sand-blasted rhodium-plated “Alpha” hands are used on the subdials. The chronograph seconds hand comes in varnished red.
The hour and minute hands, as well as the blackened indexes, also include Super-LumiNova for increased visibility in dark conditions.
All three subdials are black, as well as the minutes track and the polished ceramic bezel with its white enamel pulsometer scale.
The pulsometer scale, which is used to check a person’s heartbeats per minute, has particular relevance to the CK 2998. In fact, with the original models, customers were able to choose from four different versions of the timing bezel (including tachymeter, pulsometer, decimal or telemeter).
The watch is driven by the hand-wound Calibre 1861 which is also used for the Moonwatch model. Beating at a frequency of 3 Hz (21,600 vph), it offers a power reserve of 48 hours.
The black leather strap with a white rubber interior has been micro-perforated to enhance the sporty look.
Only 2,998 of these watches will be produced and each unique Limited Edition number can be found on the caseback, along with the original Seahorse medallion and a “SPEEDMASTER” engraving. Blue or black? That is the question!
ReplyDeleteHi reub, I prefer this one to the blue but at the end I would pick the blue because I already have white/black chronographs. It depends on what you already have.
