Introduced by Glashütte Original at Baselworld 2017, the Senator Chronograph Panorama Date in stainless steel is a timepiece which combines the casual elegance of its beautiful design with the exceptional performances and reliability of its advanced Calibre 37 column wheel chronograph movement.
Also available in platinum and red gold (we wrote about them here), the Senator Chronograph Panorama Date in stainless steel is not simply the third version in the line as it differs for its contemporary design and the exceptional legibility at any time of day or night.
We had the pleasure to handle the watch in different light conditions and verified that, thanks to the luminescent material, all indicators are perfectly legible in the dark as well.
In particular, the white gold hour, minute and stop seconds hands, the Roman numerals at 6 and 12 o’clock, and the other hour indexes are all treated with blue Super-LumiNova, which offers a fascinating blue glow if the dial was previously exposed to artificial or natural light.
By day, the polished hands and numerous white details ensure perfect contrast on the deep black dial, crafted by the experts of the watchmaker’s own dial manufactory in Pforzheim.
The distinctive Glashütte Original's Panorama Date is positioned centrally in the lower half of the dial beneath the upper-half triad formed by 30-minute and 12-hour chronograph counters and the small seconds display, in which the power reserve display is discreetly integrated.
Regarding the Panorama Date; it must be noted that the two date discs are placed on the same level without a central separation bar, enabling the smooth appearance of the date in its large window. A further demonstration of the care for details that is typical of the German brand.
The stainless steel case has a diameter of 42 mm, a size which enhances the sporty side of the timepiece, just like the finishing with satin-brushed surfaces alternating polished ones. Compared to the other two models in precious metals, the stainless steel version also features a new screw-down crown which made it possible to increase water resistance of the watch from 5 to 10 bars.
The beautifully executed case houses the manufacture Calibre 37-01 chronograph movement offering a fully integrated, compact construction with flyback mechanism.
The chronograph start and stop functions are activated by the pusher at the upper right side of the case, the flyback mechanism by the pusher at the lower right. Pressing the flyback pusher halts the on-going time measurement and the chronograph hour, minute and second hands jump back to zero. The time measurement does not stop, however, but rather begins immediately a new measurement as soon as the flyback pusher is released.
Precisely beating at 28,000 vph (4Hz), this automatic movement offers a power reserve of 70 hours when fully wound, which is a remarkable result for a mechanical chronograph.
In order to keep the performance and amplitude stable over the entire period of time, a new oscillation system with low energy requirements was developed, effectively governed by a single spring barrel. Regulation of the oscillation system is performed using four gold screws on the balance rim; the absence of a regulator on the spring allows the movement to run continuously over a much longer period of time for increased precision.
The finishing of a movement greatly accrues its value and that of the Calibre 37-01 is indeed excellent with bevelled/polished edges, polished/blued screws, stripe finish and the skeletonised rotor with the typical Glashütte Original logo.
The availability of three different bracelets - a black calfskin strap sewn with blue thread, a strap in black rubber enhanced by a lightly textured, laser-cut decoration or a polished and satin-brushed stainless steel bracelet - makes the Senator Chronograph Panorama Date even more versatile.
The steel bracelet can be easily adjusted using the patented closure, whose millimeter-precise 8 settings guarantees a comfortable fit for everyone. A double security mechanism prevents it from opening by chance.

This watch is one of my favorite of this year. It is classic but with strong personality.
ReplyDeleteAgree and think that the price is hard to beat for a column-wheel chronograph at this level of quality and with that large date.
DeleteNot sure about the blue luminova. I'd like to see it with a vintage tone.
