As we anticipated in our pre-SIHH 2017 overview article in December 2016, the new IWC Da Vinci is a complete collection which includes a wide range of models, from time-only watches to highly complicated ones, for both women and men.
In the past months we have presenting several new Da Vinci references. It is now the time to meet the models that IWC created expressly for women, the Da Vinci Automatic 36 and the Da Vinci Automatic Moon Phase 36.
Compared to the other models of the Da Vinci collection, the Automatic 36 and the Automatic Moon Phase 36 are not only smaller and slimmer, but also have a more feminine design, with rounded crowns and a less pronounced twin-frame bezel.
The three-hand Da Vinci Automatic 36 is available in five versions: in stainless steel (Ref. IW458307/IW458312), in stainless steel with a diamond-set bezel (Ref. IW458308), in red gold (Ref. IW458309, a boutique exclusive) and in red gold with a diamond-set bezel (Ref. IW458310).
The perfectly readable dials are characterized by a recessed inner circle adding a three-dimensional structure, Arabic numerals, lancet-shaped hands and a round date window at 6 o’clock.
Thanks to the moving horns, the lugs do not protrude and the strap or bracelet is held comfortably close to slim wrists.
All watches are equipped with the 35111 calibre, are tested for water-resistance to 3 bar (30 metres / 100 feet) and have a power reserve of 42 hours.
For the Da Vinci Automatic Moon Phase 36, there is a choice of three models: in stainless steel (Ref. IW459306), in stainless-steel with 54 diamonds on the bezel (Ref. IW459307) and in red gold (Ref. IW459308), all with silver-plated dials.
This sophisticated model is powered by the mechanical 35800-calibre automatic movement whose gear train advances the moon disc automatically by a single tooth each day to depict the correct phase of the moon. When necessary, the display can be adjusted via the correction button at 2 o’clock using the pin supplied with the watch. The power reserve is 42 hours.
The so-called “Flower of Life” is engraved on the case backs of all Da Vinci Automatic 36 and Da Vinci Automatic Moon Phase 36 models. The object of intensive study and numerous drawings by Leonardo da Vinci, this geometrical figure represents his quest for mathematical rules for beauty and proportions, thus symbolizing the new design approach of the watch collection.
Created by Santoni, the alligator leather straps in the colours raspberry, bronze, dark brown and dark blue underscore the watch’s aesthetic appeal.
To achieve the typical patina-like shimmer with its own individual nuances of colour, Santoni polishes the surface of the leather with a variety of different pastes until it has the desired shading and a perfect sheen.
