Omega has just unveiled its new collection of Seamaster "Edizione Venezia" watches, which will be sold exclusively in the famous Italian city.
It was Venice that in the 1950s provided the inspiration for one of Omega’s most famous symbols, the seahorse!
At the time, Omega was looking for an emblem to represent the new Seamaster collection and its diving heritage.
The answer was found by a member of Omega’s design department who had already created the iconic "Observatory" medallion that the brand used for its Constellation models. The idea came during a visit to Venice while admiring the famous gondolas and the beautifully sculpted representations of Neptune’s Seahorse on each side. The Seahorse emblem began appearing on models from 1957.
Today, Omega is paying tribute to that story, as well as the city, through this new collection.
Available either in stainless steel or 18K Sedna gold, the 39.5 mm case frames a domed opaline-silvery dial featuring 12 applied indexes as well as elegant leaf style hands.
The Venice theme even extends to the spherical crown, which follows the shape of the dome of Saint Mark's Basilica and gives the timepiece a classic look.
Turning to the other side, the caseback is one of the distinguishing features of each watch. The famous Seahorse medallion has been laser engraved on sapphire crystal and the words “Seamster” and “Edizione Venezia” have been transferred onto the inner caseback ring.
A transferred pattern, closely resembling the intricate detail of Venice’s own flag, further decorates the back.
Visible through the sapphire crystal, the self-winding Omega Co-Axial Calibre 8800 achieved the Master Chronometer status passing the 8 rigorous tests set by METAS (The Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology). Water resistance of the watch is 60 metres / 200 feet.
Matched to black or brown leather straps, both versions come in a special black-lacquered presentation box, lined in burgundy velour reminiscent of a Venetian gondola's interior.
