Aristocrat, writer, poet and pioneering aviator, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry worked for air freight and air mail companies in Africa and South America, and also undertook spectacular record-breaking attempts that on several occasions almost cost him his life. His second great passion was writing, and he was an author of international renown during his lifetime. The most famous of his literary works is the tale of "The Little Prince", which has been translated into more than 298 languages.
He disappeared over the Mediterranean on his last reconnaissance flight for the Free French Air Force in July 1944. Only in 2000 the remnants of his P-38 Lightning were discovered on the bed of the Mediterranean.
As a partner of the Fondation Antoine de Saint-Exupéry since 2008, IWC Schaffhausen is committed to helping children and young people in disadvantaged circumstances. And to honour the famous French pilot and author, IWC also created the "Antoine de Saint-Exupéry" special edition of its Pilot’s watches, which is now expanding with two new models characterized by tobacco brown dial and a brown calfskin strap with decorative white stitching.
The first model is the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition "Antoine de Saint Exupéry"(Ref. IW377713), with date and day display, which handles single and aggregate stop times of up to 12 hours.
Based on the ETA 7750, the self-winding IWC Calibre 79320 beats at 4 Hz (28,800 vph) and generates a power reserve of 44 hours – so it is even self-sufficient enough for long-haul flights. The numerals and hands on the clearly structured dial feature luminous coatings to ensure good legibility, even at night-time.
The 43 mm case, in stainless steel, is 15 mm high and water resistant to 60 metres / 195 feet. Price: Euro 5,650 / US$ 4,950.
The second model is the Pilot’s Watch Mark XVIII Edition "Antoine de Saint Exupéry" (Ref. IW327003). The 40 mm x 11 mm steel case houses the IWC Calibre 35111, the IWC version of the automatic Sellita SW300-1. It offers 42 hours of power reserve. Price: Euro 4,600 / US$ 4,000.
The two timepieces above feature an engraving of the Lightning P-38 aircraft on the case back.
IWC also unveiled a new version of the Pilot’s Watch Automatic 36 (Ref. IW324009), a model that was specifically developed for women and watch lovers with slender wrists. With a case measuring just 36 mm in diameter, it is the smallest watch in the IWC portfolio. Like reference IW327003, it is powered by the IWC Calibre 35111. Price: Euro 4,600 / US$ 4,000.
All three new watches feature IWC’s tried-and-tested technology for pilot’s watches: the soft-iron inner case effectively protects the movement against the influence of magnetic fields, and the sapphire glass is specially designed to be protected against sudden drops in pressure in the cockpit. iwc.com
