Baselworld 2017 has yet to start (March 23 - 30, 2017) but we can safely say that the new Urban Jürgensen Reference 1140 PT L Blue, a limited edition of just 30 pieces in platinum, will be one of our favorites of this year's show.
Lines and colours of this timepiece express pure harmony with a blue dial which is a real eye-catcher.
And the best comes when you consider that each Urban Jürgensen timepiece is not factory made out of some anonymous industrial building, but carefully honed in a traditional atelier, the result of a hand craftsmanship reflecting century-old traditions.
The apparent simplicity conceals the complexity of its construction.
The 40 mm classical case design has a round form and it is enhanced by the teardrop shaped lugs and the distinctive stepped bezel which frames a meticulously finished dial and hands.
Urban Jürgensen hands are completely hand-made and created from a number of components that are individually honed, assembled and finished by a highly skilled artisan.
The white gold arms of Urban Jürgensen hands are cut from solid white gold and manually finished to ensure a perfect shape and fit. Asymmetrical in their design, they are gently tapered towards the tip.
The craftsmanship excellence is evident at the centre of the dial, in the precision-turned and mirror-polished solid gold hand pipes (also known as bushes), around which the arms are riveted to ensure a perfect fit.
The hand finished guilloché dial is a work of art which alternates Grains d’orges and Guilloché Damier patterns. Each dial requires up to 700 operations and takes 2 full days of hand work to complete on a guilloché lathe.
After engine-turning and careful satin finish of the chapter ring the dial is imbued with the proprietary Urban Jurgensen blue, then indexes and logo are applied.
Crafted from white solid gold, the Arabic numeral appliques are inspired by the hand painted enamel and grand feu dials of the historic Urban Jürgensen pocket watches.
These numerals are not stamped out. Instead, they are cut in several cutting processes from a solid gold sheet to arrive at the final shape, followed by an extremely delicate hand-made polishing resulting in a fine “bombé” pillow shaped profile. Because of this artisanal process, no two sets on two dials are identical.
The 1140 PT L Blue is equipped with the in-house hand-wound Urban Jürgensen P4 Lever Escapement movement which beats at 3 Hz (21,600 vph) and features two barrels for a 72-hour power reserve.
Through the flat sapphire crystal, it is possible to appreciate the high quality of the traditional haute-horlogerie finishes.
