Moritz Grossmann produces highly exclusive timepieces and most of them are crafted from precious metals. Luckily, the recently launched ATUM line also includes several models in stainless steel, for the joy of many fans of the tough metal.
The lines of these steel models - called ATUM Pure - are not changed but the steel case emphasizes the technical nature of the collection.
The 41 mm x 11.35 mm tri-partite case has a diameter of 41 mm with a height of 11.35 mm.
The dial is endowed with a fine brushed texture and is lacquered in white, grey, or blue. Burnished chamfers on the seconds dial and along the applied markers give a sport touch to the watch.
With their straight edges and broad chamfers, the lancet-shaped hands are hand-sculpted from stainless steel, filled with white "Hy-Ceram" and then meticulously polished to attain their final look.
All three versions of the ATUM Pure are limited 150-watch editions.
Another variation in this line is the ATUM Pure M, a version in stainless steel featuring a translucent dial with an insert composed of thin woven steel filaments.
The letter "M" stands for mesh, a steel fabric which exposes the structure of the movement behind it. Among other elements, it offers a glance at the Grossmann manual winder with pusher.
The ATUM Pure M is available with a stainless steel or a black DLC steel case and, for each case version, it is possible to choose among four colours - white, blue, green and orange - for the "Hy-Ceram” filling used for the lancet-shaped hands and the prominent hour markers.
Only 50 pieces for each of the eight versions will be produced.
Both the ATUM Pure and the ATUM Pure M are equipped with the in-house designed and manufactured calibre 201.0 whose finishes and architecture can be appreciated through the sapphire crystal display back.
For these stainless steel models, Moritz Grossmann designed a special finish called Pure Classic:
the German silver plates are shot-peened with glass beads. The resulting matt surface is extremely sensitive making the assembly a very delicate phase.
The white sapphire bearing jewels, a Grossmann hallmark, are pressed directly into the plate while the movement screws are polished flat and retain their steel hue.
Beating at 18,000 vibrations per hour and offering a 42-hour power reserve, the calibre 201.0 movement embodies some of the manufacture's most prominent proprietary developments such as the Grossmann balance, the modified Glashütte stopwork, and the Grossman manual winder with pusher.
The characteristic Grossmann balance is paired with a hand-shaped flat hairspring that has two bends. Because the curb pin remains free, the adjuster curve can be accurately centred. Design modifications make it possible to adjust beat and rate separately without removing the oscillator.
For this purpose, Grossmann's watchmakers positioned the rotatable stud holder in the balance cock such that it can be conveniently blocked by tightening a clamping plate.
There is absolutely no play between the index adjuster, the stud holder, and the upper balance bearing. This allows the ATUM Pure to be precisely adjusted at any time.
