At the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie, held last January in Geneva, Roger Dubuis announced its brand-new alliance with Pirelli, a pioneer in technical and industrial innovations and the exclusive supplier of premium tyres for the Formula One Championship since 2011.
Just like F1 cars need special tyres to achieve exceptional performances, luxury watches demand straps that are secure, resistant and comfortable.
And, for sure, the new Roger Dubuis ‘Pirelli’ timepieces are well equipped with their straps featuring rubber inlays from certified Pirelli winning motorsport tyres having competed in real races – and adorned with tread motifs reproducing the profile of a Pirelli Cinturato intermediate tyre designed for races on humid or wet tracks.
The first two models designed under the partnership are the Excalibur Spider Pirelli Automatic Skeleton and the Excalibur Spider Pirelli Double Flying Tourbillon.
Water resistant to 50 metres / 165 feet, both models fully embrace the Spider concept, which extends the Roger Dubuis skeleton principle beyond the movement to encompass a fully skeletonised case, flange and hands.
Issued in a limited edition of 88 pieces, the Excalibur Spider Pirelli Automatic Skeleton features a 45 mm skeleton case with black DLC titanium elements and contrasting blue details. The height is 14.02 mm.
The 4Hz (28,800 vph) self-winding movement - Calibre RD820SQ - with skeleted micro-rotor is comprised of 167 components, all of them meticulously hand-finished in accordance with the quality criteria governing the "Poinçon de Genève" certification. It offers a power reserve of 60 hours.
The price of the Roger Dubuis Excalibur Spider Pirelli Automatic Skeleton is Swiss Francs 65,000.
The Excalibur Spider Pirelli Double Flying Tourbillon sports a larger 47 mm x 14.95 mm case whose black DLC titanium surfaces are enhanced by vulcanised blue rubber accents.
The finely decorated RD105SQ hand-wound calibre with signature star-patterned architecture features two flying tourbillons at 5 and 7 o’clock performing one rotation per minute.
The tourbillon carriages in the shape of a Celtic cross are rimmed by speedometer-like seconds counters complete with automobile-inspired pointers, while the multi-coloured power-reserve indicator represents a clear nod to racing-car cockpit fuel gauges. Beating at 21,600 vibrations per hours, this movement has an autonomy of 50 hours when fully wound.
