The Eterna KonTiki watch was first introduced in 1958 to commemorate the expedition of archaeologist and ethnologist Thor Heyerdahl which in 1947, together with five other scientists, set out from the Peruvian coast into the Pacific Ocean on a simple raft made of balsa wood named after Kon-Tiki, an Incan sun god.
With his mission, Heyerdahl wanted to prove that it would have been technically possible for the pre-Columbian Indians of South America to reach Polynesia.
With Eterna watches on their wrists showing no sign of damage from salt water or humidity, the six explorers reached the Raroia atoll in Polynesia after 101 days and nights of journey.
To mark the 70th anniversary of the KonTiki expedition, Eterna launches a new limited edition diver’s watch manufactured, for the very first time, out of bronze.
Bronze is able to resist to the corrosion effect of salt water thanks to its ability to superficially oxidize and create a greenish/brown copper oxide layer that protects it from the elements. This layer, called 'patina', will evolve with its owner by developing its own unique look.
The new Eterna KonTiki Bronze Manufacture Limited Edition continues the tradition of the model with a dial characterised by large triangular luminescent hour markers which stand out clearly against a jet-black, granite-patterned dial.
The dial is framed by a unidirectional rotating bezel with a decompression gauge. This decompression function provides divers with a useful backup to their diving computers as it indicates how long they can stay under water without needing to decompress.
Fitted with a robust leather strap whose dark brown colour brings out the warmth of the bronze case, the 44 mm x 14.05 mm case of the Eterna KonTiki Bronze Manufacture is water resistant to 200 metres / 660 feet.
The automatic movement is the Eterna manufacture Calibre 3902A, beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour with a power reserve of 65 hours.
The caseback, secured with screw down, is made in stainless steel. Produced in a limited edition of 300 pieces, the Eterna KonTiki Bronze Manufacture has a price of Euro 2,690 / US$ 2,650. eterna.ch
