Confirming the trend that sees several brands introducing models with reduced diameters in their collections, Blancpain presented a 38 mm-diameter version of its iconic and vintage-inspired Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe.
The new variation, a preview of Blancpain's Baselworld 2017 novelties, maintains the aesthetic of the 43 mm version that was launched in 2013 to mark the 60th anniversary of the Fifty Fathoms.
The new three-hand Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe 38 mm model is characterized by a fascinating blue shade recalling the depths of the ocean.
The bezel, crafted from steel just like the case, features a blue ceramic insert and hour-markers in Liquidmetal, an alloy known for its deformation resistance and its long-term stability.
The unidirectional bezel rotates counter-clockwise by small notches and, thanks to the luminescent dot on the bezel serving as an index for divers, enables accurate alignment with the minutes hand to define the start of a given dive time. During the immersion, the seconds hand serves as an operating indicator.
Water-resistant to 300 metres / 1000 feet, the Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe is powered by Calibre 1150, a robust 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour) movement offering chronometric performance which is equipped with two series-coupled barrels to ensure a 100-hour power reserve.
The calibre is visible through a sapphire crystal case-back enabling one to admire its solid gold oscillating weight coated in NAC (a platinum alloy) and sculpted to form the raised Blancpain logo appearing in relief.
Its silicon balance-spring offers several advantages: its low density greatly reduces weight, it has excellent shock resistance and it is impervious to magnetic fields. By enhancing the movement’s isochronism, these properties improve the precision of the watch.

38/40 mm is the perfect size for most watches. Good decision from Blancpain.
