The name comes from the mythology of Ancient Egypt, where Atum was the god of creation, the genesis of everything.
Presented in a three-part precious metal case, the ATUM has a diameter of 41 mm with a height of 11.35 mm. The slender bezel frames a solid-silver dial with contrasting applied markers with polished chamfers. The subsidiary small seconds dial is recessed, so that the hands can hover tightly over the minute scale.
The typical lance-shaped hands are manually crafted with broad chamfers to nicely match the three-dimensionality of the hour markers.
The ATUM is available in three versions: rose gold case with argenté dial and flame-annealed brown steel hands, white gold case with argenté dial and flame-annealed brown steel hands, and white gold case with charcoal dial and stainless steel hands. The annealing process is a heat treatment that requires great dexterity and perfect timing to obtain the desired result.
The calibre 100.1 manufacture movement of the ATUM can be admired through the ample, non-reflective sapphire-crystal display back.
The characteristic 2/3 plate in untreated German silver is decorated with wide horizontal ribbing with a hand-engraved signature. The circular cut-out of the plate reveals the new Grossmann balance for the first time. It is carried by the cantilevered, hand-engraved balance cock with the typical micrometer screw. Its design improves the adjustability of inertia and achieves high kinetic energy combined with minimised air resistance and the smallest possible mass.
Another distinctive feature of Moritz Grossmann movements, the Grossmann winder with pusher features a refined hand setting mechanism that eliminates two possible error sources: the ingress of particles into the case while the hands are being set and the unintentional alteration of the hand positions while the crown is being pushed home again.
In fact, when the user pulls the winding crown out, the winder switches to the hand setting mode and simultaneously stops the movement. The crown immediately returns to its home position but can now be turned to precisely set the hands. Once ready, the movement can be restarted by pressing the push button at 4 o’clock so avoiding the possibility to alter the positions of the hands. At the same time, the mechanism switches back to the winding mode.
Another innovative solution is represented by the Glashütte stopwork which secures the tension of the mainspring. After winding, it allows the ratchet wheel to reverse somewhat and slightly relax the mainspring.
