Glashütte Original Senator Excellence. For the introduction of its brand new manufacture automatic movement, Calibre 36, Glashütte Original decided to launch an entirely new line: the Senator Excellence. At Baselworld 2016, Glashütte Original presented three new Senator Excellence models that are equipped with Calibre 36, all settled in a 40 mm x 10 mm classic round case. The price of the Glashütte Original Senator Excellence is Euro 8,800 / US$ 8,500 in stainless steel (ref. 1-36-59-01-02-01 with white dial or ref. 1-36-59-03-02-01 with black dial) or Euro 15,900 / US$ 15,500 in red gold (ref. 1-36-59-02-05-01).
For the introduction of its brand new manufacture automatic movement, Calibre 36, Glashütte Original decided to launch an entirely new line: the Senator Excellence.
With four main guiding principles - extreme stability, maximum precision, extended running and aesthetic balance - Glashütte Original developed a movement with classic hour, minute and seconds functions which is not only a demonstration of craft skills but also a foundation for future developments.
A first time for the brand, Calibre 36 is fitted with a silicon balance spring, a solution which makes the ultra-thin spring immune to changes in temperature and to magnetic fields while contributing to an extremely isochronous oscillation.
Beating at a frequency of 4 Hertz (28,800 alternations per hour), the new movement offers a remarkable power reserve of 100 hours, a result which Glashütte Original achieved with the use of only one spring barrel, developed specifically for this purpose: increased diameter and a smaller barrel arbour made it possible to lengthen the mainspring and sharply increase the number of winding turns.

The first two models - one in red gold, the other in stainless steel - feature an understated, elegant dial with a light, silver-grained lacquer surface along with laser-cut, galvanised black indexes and a corresponding railroad minute ring. The Roman numerals at 6 and 12 o’clock create a pleasant visual balance.
The stainless steel model presents finely drawn minute numerals inspired by those of historic pocket watches, laser-cut and galvanised in black, while the red gold version offers these numerals printed in red. Long and slim poire hands and a filigreed seconds hand complete the beautiful dial.
Both models are matched to black Louisiana alligator leather straps with pin buckles.
The third model is inspired to traditional Glashütte observation watches and is characterised by a black varnished dial and finely curved Arabic numerals.
Thanks to the generous use of Super-LumiNova for the hands and the hour indexes, this Senator Excellence model guarantees excellent legibility even with poor light conditions. For this version, Glashütte Original opted for a black calfskin strap with pin buckle.
All the three models have a sapphire crystal case back which allows the owner to appreciate the typical Glashütte decorations and construction features like the characteristic three-quarter plate, the skeletonised rotor, the refined stripe finish, perlage and blued screws as well as the manual winding chain that can be observed in action as the watch is wound by hand.
