At Baselworld 2016, Tudor introduced six new Black Bay references in the Heritage family, the line that reworks some of the historical references of the brand into contemporary timepieces.
All the new models maintain the typical design elements of the line like the prominent winding crown with the engraved Tudor rose and the characteristic angular hands known as snowflake.
The main novelty is the Heritage Black Bay Bronze model featuring an imposing bronze case, 43 mm in diameter, which is an aesthetic reference to the use of bronze in historic ships and other diving equipment. It is waterproof to 200 metres / 660 feet.
The choice of this metal, a high-performance aluminium bronze alloy with a brushed finish, guarantees the development of a subtle and unique patina that will change from piece to piece depending on its user's habits.
The chocolate-brown dial and the bronze unidirectional rotatable bezel with disc in matt brown anodised aluminium with golden and beige accents nicely match the bronze case.
Tudor equipped the Heritage Black Bay Bronze with the in-house automatic calibre MT5601, a slightly larger in diameter variant (33.8 mm instead of 31.8 mm) of the MT5602 calibre introduced in 2015 as the first Tudor mechanical movement to have been completely developed, manufactured and assembled in-house. Both the MT5601 and the MT5602 movements are certified by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC).
Beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour, these movements offer a 70-hour power reserve and are regulated by a variable inertia oscillator with silicon balance spring, held in place by a traversing bridge for enhanced protection.
The Tudor Heritage Black Bay Bronze (ref. 79250BM) comes with an aged leather strap with bronze buckle as well as with an additional fabric strap. The price is Swiss Francs 3,800.
Another addition to the family is the Heritage Black Bay Dark proposed in a 41 mm steel case, finished with a black PVD-treated (Physical Vapour Deposition) coating. Derived from the thin film technology originally developed by NASA for its various space programs, PVD or physical vapour deposition enables various inorganic materials to be bonded with metals.
The watch is equipped with the Tudor manufactured 4 Hz (28,800 vph) self-winding MT5602.
With a choice of black PVD-treated steel bracelet or an aged leather strap with a black PVD-treated steel folding clasp, each Heritage Black Bay Dark model is also supplied with an extra grey fabric strap.
The Tudor Heritage Black Bay Dark (ref. 79230DK) has a retail price of Swiss Francs 3,950.
The MT5602 movement is now housed also in the other three versions of the 41 mm stainless steel Heritage Black Bay: reference 79230N with black bezel, black dial, rose-gold hands and markers, reference 79230R with burgundy bezel, black dial, rose-gold hands and markers, and reference 79230B (also known as "Midnight Blue") with blue bezel, deep-black dial, silvery hands and markers.
Tudor has also reworked the steel bracelet which comes with these models, taking inspiration from the brand’s riveted bracelets made in the 50s and 60s.
Also available with an aged leather strap and folding clasp, the Heritage Black Bay model is supplied in both cases with an extra strap in matching fabric.
The three Heritage Black Bay models in steel have the same price of Swiss Francs 3,200.
The last addition to the line is the Heritage Black Bay 36 model that, while retaining the Black Bay style elements, comes in a smaller diameter of 36 mm which makes the watch suitable for slimmer wrists as well as for Ladies.
The stainless steel case with a fixed smooth steel bezel frames the shiny black with the characteristic "snowflake" angular hands. With a choice of a steel bracelet or a lightly distressed beige-coloured leather strap with steel folding clasp, each Heritage Black Bay 36 is also supplied with an additional strap in urban camouflage fabric.
Water resistant to 150 metres / 500 feet, the Heritage Black Bay 36 is powered by the self-winding mechanical movement Tudor calibre 2824 (ETA-based). The price is Swiss Francs 2,400. tudorwatch.com
