At Baselworld 2016 Rolex introduced a new Oyster Perpetual Air-King, the watch model that Rolex created in the 1950s as a tribute to the pioneers of flight and the role that the Oyster watches had in the story of aviation.
The new Air-King features a distinctive black dial with a combination of large 3, 6 and 9 numerals marking the hours and a prominent minutes scale for navigational time readings. The signature Rolex green is used for the brand's logo and for the seconds hand while the crown is depicted in yellow. The dial bears the Air-King logo in the same lettering that was used for the first model taking this name.
Crafted from the particularly corrosion-resistant 904L steel, the Air-King’s Oyster case has a diameter of 40 mm case and is guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 100 metres / 330 feet.
The fluted case back is hermetically screwed down with a special tool that allows only Rolex watchmakers to access the movement. Fitted with the Twinlock double waterproofness system, the winding crown screws down securely against the case. The case is also fitted with a shield to protect against magnetic fields.
The new Air-King is equipped with the in-house self-winding Calibre 3131 beating at 28,800 vph and offering 48 hours of power reserve.
Its oscillator, the true heart of the watch, has a blue Parachrom hairspring patented and manufactured by Rolex in an exclusive alloy which is insensitive to magnetic fields and offers great stability in case of temperature variations. Tests also proved that it remains up to 10 times more precise than a traditional hairspring in case of shocks.
The solid-link Oyster bracelet in 904L steel features a folding Oysterclasp and the Rolex-patented Easylink rapid extension system that allows the wearer to quickly increase the bracelet length by approximately 5 mm when needed.
The Air-King carries the Superlative Chronometer certification redefined by Rolex in 2015 and applied to the fully assembled watch, after casing the movement to guarantee precision, power reserve, waterproofness and self-winding. The precision of a Rolex Superlative Chronometer after casing is of the order of −2/+2 seconds per day. The price of the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Air-King Ref. 116900 is Swiss Francs 5,900. rolex.com
