SIHH 2016: Officine Panerai - Luminor 8 Days Set PAM 786For collectors and lovers of "Pre-Vendome" Panerai models, Officine Panerai presented a new set composed of two watches inspired to the models created in 1996: a left-handed version of the Luminor Black Seal and a very rare Luminor Daylight with a white dial and blue markers. Officine Panerai will produce only 500 examples of the Luminor 8 Days Set PAM00786 with a price of Euro 19,900.
As described in our History of the Panerai Luminor, in 1996 Panerai made a few small series of Luminor watches commissioned by Sylvester Stallone. The American actor wore one of them in its Daylight movie and gave some examples to his friends as a gift (one of them was Arnold Schwarzenegger which wore a Luminor Marina in the Eraser movie).
These circumstances contributed to create a huge buzz around Panerai, something which attracted the attention of the Vendôme Luxury Group (today Richemont Group) which in 1997 completed the acquisition of the Officine Panerai watchmaking business. Watches produced between 1993 and 1997 are generally referred to as "Pre-Vendome" models.
For collectors and lovers of these references, Officine Panerai presented a new set composed of two watches inspired to the models created in 1996: a left-handed version of the Luminor Black Seal and a very rare Luminor Daylight with a white dial and blue markers.
The two watches are supplied in a box inspired by those used for vintage Luminor watches, made of pear wood with a teak base and containing a model of the human torpedo (Siluro a Lenta Corsa – slow speed torpedo), together with a rare publication about the military equipment of the special forces of the Royal Italian Navy, in which Panerai watches and instruments appear. The box also includes a spare strap for each model and a screwdriver.
The Luminor Black Seal Left-Handed 8 Days is the version with the winding crown and the lever device protecting it on the left side of the case of the historic Luminor Black Seal. The tradition of making watches for left-handers had already been started by Panerai in the 1940s, when some models were made in this way to enable the watches to be worn on a frogman’s right wrist, while the compass and depth gauge were worn on the left.
Made of stainless steel coated with DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon), its case has a diameter of 44 mm.
The Luminor Daylight 8 Days is the reproduction of a model of 1996 of which only a very few examples exist. In fact, the white dial/blue markers dial was soon replaced by a white dial/black markers one after the delivery of the first prototypes.
The 44 mm case is crafted from AISI 316L stainless steel with a polished finish, as is the winder protecting device, here more traditionally positioned on the right side.
Both cases are closed a screw back, engraved with the words "Officine Panerai Firenze" and the OP logo, and offer water-resistance to 30 bar (equivalent to a depth of about 300 metres).
Inside, the hand-wound P.5000 calibre, made in the Panerai Manufacture in Neuchâtel, beats at 21,600 vibrations per hour and, thanks to two barrels, offers a remarkable power reserve of 8 days when fully wound.
