With most of the attention around the Reverso which celebrates its 85th anniversary in 2016, the new Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Perpetual with black dial was introduced at SIHH 2016 without much buzz although the watch really stands out.
The watch maintains the same features and design of the model presented in 2013 with a 39 mm stainless steel case and a sunburst silver-toned dial as a boutique-only edition.
In addition to the hour, minute and central seconds hands the black dial displays three counters dedicated to the perpetual calendar indications: the first at 9 o’clock for the day of the week, the second at 3 o’clock for the date, and the third at 6 o’clock for the month. A full four-digit display indicating the year appears through a small aperture at 7 o’clock.
A single corrector located on the side of the case is enough to change all the indications in accordance with a remarkably simple principle: one press moves the perpetual calendar one day forwards, while any additional changes required to keep step with the vagaries of the Gregorian calendar take place automatically. The watch mechanism takes account of the unequal length of months with 28, 30 or 31 days. Every four years, it will just as naturally display the 29th of February that is associated with leap years. It will thus require no manual adjustment before March 1st 2100, since century years are an exception to the four-year cycle governing leap years. Meanwhile, the moon-phase display will portray the various states of our satellite over the next 122 years.
Above the dial centre, a small rectangular window, generally in the same shade as the background, turns gradually red as evening falls indicating the period (between 10 PM and 4 AM) during which it is preferable to avoid any adjustments in order to avoid potentially damaging the gear wheels that are already engaged in preparing the change of indication that takes place daily at midnight.
The case, characterized by the streamlined lugs and the slim bezel, has a thickness of just 9.2 mm and houses the Manufacture's Calibre 868 visible through the sapphire crystal case-back.
