Tag Heuer just announced the release of the Monaco Calibre 11 Chronograph, a pretty faithful reissue of the Heuer Monaco 1969 original model.
The Heuer Monaco was the first square, water-resistant automatic chronograph watch in the history of Swiss watchmaking. It was launched in 1969 and took its name from the Monaco Formula One race.
At the time, the first Monaco (ref. 1133) brought a break in the watch industry with its large square case, metallic blue dial, bright red minute hand, and domed plastic crystal. The crown was provocatively positioned on the left to remark that the watch did not need winding.
The Monaco was also very innovative in terms of technology delivering perfect water resistance, a first for a square watch, and introducing the Chronomatic Calibre 11, which was the first automatic chronograph movement available to the public in the history of watchmaking.
Steve McQueen contributed to make it a watch icon wearing the Monaco ref. 1133B during the filming of the Le Mans movie in 1971.
The 2015 Monaco Calibre 11 Chronograph shows that it is a direct descendant of the 1969 original featuring the crown on the left, the petroleum blue dial with two white counters, the date window at 6 o'clock, the diamond-polished horizontal hour indices with red accents and, as the final touch, the inscribed vintage Heuer.
Compared to the original, the steel case of the 2015 version is slightly more square (39 mm x 39 mm versus 40 x 38 mm), has a three-part construction (adopted since 1998) and it is closed with 4 screws. It offers water resistance to 100 metres / 330 feet.
The two push-pieces at 2 and 4 o'clock with a rectangular shape, the lugs a little larger, the sapphire crystal (since 2009) and an open case-back to reveal the movement are all new features.
The movement is the 4 Hz (28,800 vph) Tag Heuer Calibre 11 with Dubois Dépraz chronograph module delivering a 40-hour power reserve.

This is one of the rare cases where I like more the replica than the original. Well done. The price is pretty high tough.
ReplyDeleteI am in agreement. The push buttons are better integrated into the case.
