Highlights from Antiquorum, Christie's and Sotheby's December auctions in New York

Highlights from Antiquorum, Christie's and Sotheby's December auctions in New York. Sotheby’s New York Watch Department will offer 345 lots in the Important Watches sale which will take place on December 10. An automatic perpetual calendar Patek Philippe Ref. 3448 (lot 345) is expected to the be the top lot of the auction.
The first half of December New York will host a number of important auctions of fine timepieces from Antiquorum, Christie's, Sotheby's and others.

The number of lots is huge so here we can only highlight a few pieces and provide you with the links to the detailed on-line catalogues.

Sotheby’s New York Watch Department will offer 345 lots in the Important Watches sale which will take place on December 10.

An automatic perpetual calendar Patek Philippe Ref. 3448 (lot 345) is expected to the be the top lot of the auction. Originally produced in 1966 with a white gold case, the watch comes with factory-supplied and documented additional yellow gold case, dial, hands and crown that were provided in 1986. The movement is the automatic calibre 27-460 with gold rotor.

Ref. 3448 was launched in 1962 and, at that time, it was the only automatic perpetual calendar wristwatch on the market, and Patek Philippe's first watch with those features.  Only 586 pieces were made in total. Of those, it is estimated that fewer than one-quarter were made in white gold, such as the present lot.

This exceptional watch is accompanied by an incredibly accurate documentation and paperwork allowing to follow all the events related to the timepiece. In 1966, four years after the launch of the model, the original owner sent a check amounting to $670 to Patek Philippe, and the sale was completed on January 7th of the next year. In 1976, the owner visited the factory, and upon seeing the new dials furnished for Ref. 3448 watches, requested one during his scheduled service organized through Henri Stern Watch Agency.

In 1981, the Ref. 3450 was launched, the next evolution of the Ref. 3448, featuring a modified case design, most notably to the case back, and a dial displaying the leap year indication. Just after the Ref. 3450 was introduced, in 1982, the Ref. 3448 was discontinued. Ref. 3450 was made for just a few years after that, with production ceasing in 1985.

In 1986, at the owner's request, Patek Philippe's Geneva headquarters supplied a yellow gold Ref. 3450 case, along with a new Ref. 3448 dial with yellow gold indexes, and accompanying hands and crown.

Movement 1119046 was granted permission to float freely between case 318947 (Ref. 3448G) and case 2788630 (Ref. 3450J). Estimate: US$ 300,000 - 500,000

Together with highly expensive lots it is possible to find excellent opportunities even in a much lower price range, for example under US$ 10,000.

Like lot 51, a pink gold automatic Breguet wristwatch with date and regulator dial Ref. 5187. Dating back to 2004, this model from the Classique collection has a 36 mm case which frames a silvered engine turned dial with eccentric checkerboard guilloché hour display at 12 o' clock, Roman numerals, satin finished outer minute track, and an aperture for date at 6 o 'clock. The calibre 591 nickel lever movement features an engine turned pink gold rotor. Estimate: US$ 7,000 - 9,000

The Antiquorum auction will be held on December 15 at its US headquarters in New York City. A selection of 255 collectible timepieces will be presented in the sale highlighted by an exceptional collection of complicated Patek Philippe wristwatches including an extremely rare Patek Philippe Ref. 5016 Tourbillon Minute Repeater Perpetual Calendar, a Patek Philippe Ref. 5213 Minute Repeater Retrograde Perpetual Calendar and a Patek Philippe Ref. 5539 Tourbillon Minute Repeater with Black Enamel Dial.

Jaeger LeCoultre collectors will be interested in the Limited Edition Master Minute Repeater in Titanium, the piece number 5 of a limited edition of 5 pieces.

Dating back to 2010, this is an rare minute-repeating timepiece with a black coated titanium case. The dial included 15-day power reserve and spring torque indications. Estimate: US$ 55,000 - 75,000

At the "Rare Watches & Important Discoveries" auction that Christie's will hold on December 16 the lion's share will go to several several Patek Philippe complicated wristwatches.

Here we highlight a beautiful and rare triple calendar chronograph wristwatch Ref. 6036 from Rolex made in 1953. The watch is anti-magnetic and features a 36 mm water-resistant Oyster case in yellow gold housing a Calibre 72C mechanical lever movement.

The silvered dial has applied faceted triangular-shaped numerals with outer blue date ring, central blued steel date hand, two apertures for day and month in English, three engine-turned subsidiary dials for 12 hours and 30 minutes registers and constant seconds. Estimate: US$ 150,000 - 250,000
