A tribute to the design of the 1960s, the Sixties Iconic Collection from Glashütte Original comprises five colourful watches with the distinctive style elements of the Sixties line.
The design of the Sixties model was inspired to a successful watch produced by the then state-owned VEB Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe, the Spezimatic. Introduced in 1964, this wristwatch was manufactured from 1964 to 1979 and saw a large number of different versions and colourful dials.
With this in mind, Glashütte Original developed five dials in unique hues that give the new models their names: Sixties Red, Sixties Golden, Sixties Aqua, Sixties Brown and Sixties Grey.
All five models are characterised by an eye-catching dégradé effect on the dial, which is achieved using an extremely complex and time-consuming process in Glashütte Original's own dial manufactory in Pforzheim, Germany. In this process the dials are first galvanised, then layers of lacquer are added by hand in various steps.
In a final step, a further colour is carefully applied to this "canvas" using a special spray gun: a technique which produces, depending on the angle, an individual colour gradient, known as the dégradé effect, which renders each watch unique.
The Sixties Red, Golden, and Aqua combine these shadings with a refined sunray finishing while the Sixties Grey and Brown (below) are further enhanced by an elaborate imprint reproducing a fine rhombic pattern for the first and a structure evocative of dew drops for the second. This complex technique makes use of guilloche stamps, which, with the help of a 60-ton press, imprint their filigree pattern on the paper-thin dials.
The five models of the new Sixties Iconic Collection feature the typical domed dials and lightly arched hour and minute hands, both with Super-LumiNova highlights. The Arabic numerals at 3, 6, 9 and 12 o'clock are typical of the 1960s as seen on some historic models.
The softly rounded stainless steel case - measuring 39 mm x 9.4 mm - houses the automatic Calibre 39-52, a manufactory made movement beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour and offering a power reserve of 40 hours.
The movement is nicely finished according to the Glashütte tradition with its three-quarter plate, the swan-neck fine adjustment and the signature skeletonized rotor with stripe finish and double-G logo.
Fitted with a matching Louisiana alligator leather strap, each model of the Glashütte Original Sixties Iconic Collection will have a retail price of around Euro 6,300 / US$ 7,500. glashuette-original.com
