Following the inaugural edition of 50 pieces made from titanium (presented with full details here), MB&F is now presenting a new version of its HM6 Space Pirate, the Horological Machine No. 6 in the history of the Geneva brand.
The new HM6 RT will be produced in just 18 pieces and is characterised by a precious case that was machined from two solid ingots of 18K 5N+ red gold.
Compared to the standard 5N red gold alloy (75% gold and 25% copper), the 5N+ red gold alloy adds a small amount of palladium to gold and copper. Palladium "fixes" the copper molecules so that they do not come in contact with the air, so avoiding the copper tarnishing and the possible change of colour over time due to the exposition to oxygen.
Red gold is combined to a polished titanium band running around the central circumference of the hull acting as a reinforcement for the structure. This band also supports the pivoted lugs which move freely in order to comfortably adapt to any wrist.
The HM6 RT is powered by a 475-component automatic winding movement beating at 18,000 vibrations per hours and offering 72 hours of power reserve.
In each of the four corners of the HM6 case is a sphere, capped top and bottom by transparent sapphire crystal domes.
The two front spheres are used to display hours and minutes in large, highly legible numerals through aluminium indication domes which rotate vertically to the plane of the movement.
The two back spheres house two turbines, each composed of no fewer than 15 curved vanes and machined in two hemispheres from solid blocks of aluminium, which create internal resistance (through increased air friction) and slow down the winding rotor when this starts rotating too quickly. This helps to reduce stress and wear.
The central dome houses the 60-second flying tourbillon with a retractable, semi-spherical, titanium protective shield. The cover blocks harmful rays (especially UV light) from prematurely oxidising the movement's lubrication oils. The crown at 9 o'clock opens and closes the cover instantaneously.
The HM6 RT is a limited edition of 18 pieces. MB&F will produce only 100 HM6 movements in total so we are already curious to see what Maximilian Büsser and Friends have in mind for the remaining 32 movements after the first 50 pieces in titanium and these 18 in red gold.

Impressive. Not sure I would wear it but impressive as a timepiece.
