The Neuchâtel-based contemporary watchmaker Hautlence just unveiled the Vortex, the latest addition to the Concept d’Exception collection which includes the brand's most avant-garde timepieces developed with the ambition to push the boundaries of traditional watchmaking.
The Vortex respects the design codes that made the Hautlence timepieces easily recognisable: multi-level reading of time, transparent surfaces, squared shapes.
Protected by three patents, the innovative in-house automatic calibre HLR2.0 is visible from all sides thanks to a titanium case which features six three-dimensional sapphire crystals. The size of the watch is 52 mm x 50 mm x 17.8 mm for a total weight of 120 grams.
In some way, the look of the watch keeps changing every hour because the cage of the regulating organ rotates 60 degrees every 60 minutes.
Limited to just 88 pieces, the Vortex displays half-trailing hours, retrograde minutes and a power-reserve indicator in a grey colour scheme. The only dash of colour is seen on the power reserve indicator, displayed in red. The indication of the hours and minutes and the brand logo appear to be engraved directly into the metal.
The bridges of the rotating cage of the calibre were redesigned with tense lines and angular shapes to create a nice contrast with the roundness and refinement of the mechanical elements of the regulating organ.
The inclined ring is embedded in the bridges of the cage so as to offer a clear view of the regulating organ as it rotates.
The first of the three patents pertains to the 12-link chain of the half-trailing hours, which smoothly turns in 3 to 4 seconds every 60 minutes to display the hour. The smooth transition is in this case a better choice than an instant system in order to allow the wearer to fully enjoy the change.
The second patent relates to the regulating organ integrated into the mobile bridge-type movement while the third patent concerns the operation of the movement’s two barrels. The main barrel is wound by the automatic-winding system of the movement and continuously transfers the necessary energy to wind a second barrel that is dedicated exclusively to the hour display change so avoiding any impact on the precision of the watch.
The Hautlence Vortex is delivered with three straps: a black Louisiana alligator leather strap with large square scales, a black hornback crocodile leather strap with red stitching and a black rubber strap, each equipped with a folding clasp in grade 2 titanium with a palladium plate. The three straps can be interchanged with a screwdriver that is included in the box.
