March auctions: top lots from Antiquorum and Christie’s

On Sunday March 15th, at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Geneva, Antiquorum will offer for sale 419 wrist watches and pocket watches. Rolex reference 8171 Padellone. Vacheron Constantin "Saint-Gervais". Patek Philippe Nautilus "Jumbo" reference 3700. Christie’s first sale of the year will be in Dubai, when Christie’s will offer 185 watches, the largest offering of any watch sale in the Middle East. Patek Philippe reference 5104P. Patek Philippe reference 5951P. Breguet reference 3757.
The watch auction season 2015 heats up with two important auctions that will be held in the coming weeks.

On Sunday March 15th, at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Geneva, Antiquorum will offer for sale 419 wrist watches and pocket watches.

One of the highlight of the sale will be the Rolex reference 8171 Padellone in pink gold never before offered at an auction. Made in 1951, it is a rare self-winding 18K pink gold chronometer wristwatch with triple date and moon phases. Estimate: Swiss Francs 100,000 – 200,000.

The Vacheron Constantin "Saint-Gervais" with tourbillon and perpetual calendar was produced in 2006 to mark the occasion of the quarter millenium of Vacheron Constantin. Made in 55 examples, this is the number 12. The name "Saint-Gervais" references Geneva’s traditional watchmaking quarter, the home of Vacheron Constantin’s historic headquarters. According to Antiquorum, this is the only watch with 250-hour power reserve, perpetual calendar and tourbillon to employ four simultaneously working barrels. Estimate: Swiss Francs 250,000 – 350,000.

Another Rolex that always attracts collectors is the Daytona Paul Newman. In this occasion, Antiquorum will offer a sought after reference 6263 produced in 1972, in stainless steel with black bezel and a two-color Panda dial with no oxidation or scratches.  Estimate: Swiss Francs 100,000 – 150,000.

Also on sale a Patek Philippe Nautilus "Jumbo" reference 3700 originally sold in 1980.
The watch is accompanied by the original box and Certificate of Origin. Estimate: Swiss Francs 20,000 - 30,000.

Christie’s first sale of the year will be in Dubai, when Christie’s will offer 185 watches, the largest offering of any watch sale in the Middle East. The auction will take place on the night of 19th of March at the Jumeirah Emirates Towers Hotel.

The top lot of the sale is a Patek Philippe reference 5104P, made in 2009. It is one of less than 6 examples to have come up for auction to date. The platinum and pink gold 43 mm case of the 5104 features a semi-skeletonised dial that reveals the normally concealed complex mechanisms on the front. Functions include minute repetition, perpetual calendar with retrograde date, day, month, moon phases and leap year indication. It takes two years just to craft the parts, assemble the movement and adjust its rate to perfection, meaning that the Geneva based workshop can only produce 8-10 of these rare watches a year. Estimate: US$ 450,000 - 650,000.

Another exceptional Patek Philippe timepiece on sale is the reference 5951P, a rare platinum cushion-shaped perpetual calendar single button split second chronograph wristwatch, made circa 2011. This model was launched at Baselworld fair in 2010 and it is remarkable for its height of just 7.3mm, making the reference 5951P the thinnest rattrapante chronograph with perpetual calendar ever crafted by Patek Philippe. Estimate: US$ 300,000 - 500,000.

The Breguet reference 3757 is classic complications model made in 2002 with a fine and rare gold perpetual calendar and tourbillon movement. It also includes a retrograde date and leap year indication. Estimate: US$ 60,000 - 80,000.
