Should the aesthetic balance of an iconic watch like the Lange 1 be altered? Of course not. In fact, when A. Lange & Söhne decided to release a new edition of the most successful timepiece created by the Saxon brand, it was completely clear that the inimitable design of the Lange 1 had to be fully preserved.
With its asymmetric dial and the patented outsize date, the Lange 1 became an instant classic since its introduction in 1994. Very few watches could gain an iconic status in such a short time frame. If you missed it, we suggest you to read the detailed history of the Lange 1 here.
So, what are the changes of the new Lange 1, just introduced at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie 2015?
The main novelty is represented by the new manufacture calibre L121.1 – the 50th in the portfolio of in-house movements. While it cannot be considered a revolution, this new movement is an important technical evolution, the result of 25 years of experience.
The jumping outsize date display instantaneously switches at midnight using a force that is slowly built up during a period of several hours. Additionally, the escapement now features a balance wheel with eccentric poising weights and a free-sprung hairspring crafted in-house. Other than that, the movement still beats at 21,600 vibrations per hour and a power reserve of 72 hours thanks to the twin mainspring barrel.
Wisely, the signature dial configuration remained practically untouched. Without changing the 38.5 mm case diameter, the bezel was slightly narrowed to add openness to the face of the watch.
Another subtle difference, which enhances the elegance of the watch, is represented by slimmer letters used for the arc signature and the other texts.

Overall, we believe that this edition further improves the technical excellence of the Lange 1 while making it even more elegant. alange-soehne.com

Above and below, the new Lange 1 is on the right: note the slightly thinner bezel and the slimmer stroke of the fonts

I like the new dial more. It is cleaner. Not completely sure about the movement.
