Located in the heart of Geneva, HEAD Genève is one of the major art and design training institutions in Switzerland. Welcoming more than 700 students from 40 different nationalities, the school offers BA and MA courses in Visual Arts, Cinema, Graphic Design, Interior Architecture, Fashion, Jewelry and Accessories Design, Media Design and Spaces and Communication.
In 2015, HEAD Genève will launch a new Chair in Watch Design as an optional specialisation within the Product and Industrial Design program at HEAD Genève and will include classes in watch design and culture.
Despite of Geneva being the recognised worldwide capital of watchmaking, quite surprisingly there was not yet a specific chair in watch design. HEAD Genève is now going to fill the gap.
The Chair in Watch Design will be part of the Bachelor of Arts in Product and Industrial Design, major in Jewellery and Accessory Design, and the Master of Arts in Design, major in Fashion and Accessory Design.
Appropriately integrated within the wider context of the field of design, the program will offer a specific pathway within the general curriculum of jewellery and accessory design.
The course will develop three main lines:
- understanding watches (history of timekeeping and watchmaking, concepts and production);
- technical development (2D and 3D representation and animation, 3D modelling, ergonomics, materials, finishes and surface treatments, technical innovation);
- understanding the watch market (watch marketing, market analysis, strategy, price and positioning, spirit of brands).
The program will be led by Marco Borraccino, watch designer and lecturer in the design of watches, industrial products and luxury goods, who has taught at HEAD Genève since 2008, where he has gradually developed training in this sector. He will be assisted by three or four key figures from the watchmaking world as well as numerous external international contributors.
The scientific committee includes well known personalities of the watchmaking world:
Maximilien Busser, MB&F
Timm Delfs, journalist
Manuel Emch, RJ-Romain Jerome Watches
Bernard Gautier, Beroma SA
Eric Giroud, designer
Carine Maillard, Grand Prix de l’Horlogerie de Genève
Fabrice Paget, The Luxury Brand Agency
Catherine de Vincenti, CDV Consulting
Jean-Marc Wiederrecht, Agenhor SA
The program will launch on September 2015 with application deadlines in March 2015 and entrance examination starting in April 2015.
